Mutana Hill is located in Butanyerera Province, within Kayanza Commune and the Nkonge Zone. Administratively, the hill is governed by the hill chief under the supervision of the zone chief and the overall authority of the commune administrator. Local governance is further supported by a five-member hill committee working alongside community elders to oversee local development and community affairs. The hill is bordered by Nkonge to the north, Gitwe to the south, Gishubi to the west, and Rukoma to the east. Characterized by steep slopes and situated at an elevation of approximately 2,100–2,200 meters above sea level, Mutana enjoys favorable agroecological conditions that make it particularly suitable for the cultivation of specialty coffee. The dominant soil type is clay, with an average depth of about 30 cm, while the area receives an average annual rainfall of approximately 106.57 mm and experiences an estimated diurnal temperature range of 16.49°F. Agriculture and livestock production form the backbone of the local economy, with farmers cultivating crops such as maize, beans, wheat, potatoes, cassava, red and white onions, and coffee. Livestock rearing, including cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and rabbits, complements crop production by providing food, income, and household assets. The hill also supports a variety of tree species, including Grevillea, avocado, Alnus, eucalyptus, and Calliandra, which contribute to soil conservation, provide shade for coffee, enhance biodiversity, and improve soil fertility through organic matter. Mutana Hill is located adjacent to Kibira National Park, whose forest ecosystem plays a vital role in regulating the local climate, promoting rainfall, and supporting environmental sustainability. In addition, the presence of a natural waterfall enhances the area's ecological significance and scenic beauty, offering potential opportunities for environmental conservation, watershed protection, and sustainable eco-tourism development while reinforcing the hill's rich natural resource base.
